Spring Thaw - Marion, Iowa Flood Insurance

Flood Insurance Cedar Rapids Iow

Punxsutawney Phil may have seen his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter (though who knows in Iowa!), but one day the snow will melt and all of the leftover snow and ice will begin to thaw out. This thaw creates excess water that can cause water damage or other issues around your home if you aren’t careful about the spring thaw. As a Marion, Iowa Insurance Company, we offer flood insurance so you can be at peace with the spring thaw. Here are some important ways to play it safe and prevent a flooded basement or other flood damage:

  1. Inspect the drainage system: The drainage system should be free of obstructions so the melted snow and ice can drain away from your home. Check roof drains and floor drains in and outside of your home.

  2. Check the gutters and downspouts: Clear any debris from your gutters and downspouts so they can properly drain water runoff away from your home.

  3. Inspect your roof: It is very important to check the condition of your roof and make sure there is no winter damage. Hiring a professional is the best and safest option.

  4. Test your sump pump: In early spring, make sure your sump pump is working properly to prevent basement flooding. If you don’t have one, you might consider installing one as an extra layer of protection, especially if you have any delicate or important items stored in your basement.

  5. Consider flood insurance: Homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood damage. A flood insurance policy will protect your home, should the precautions you make not be enough to prevent damage in and around your home.

Let’s all prepare our homes for the spring thaw so we can truly enjoy warmer weather just around the corner!
